HOW TO FILL YOUR FLOOR CUSHION

So you've bought a beautiful, handmade floor cushion and now it's time to fill it! We're sharing all of our tips & tricks on how to fill out your floor cushion, the best filling to use and how to keep it nice and plump.

WHICH FILLING DO I USE?

In principle, floor cushions, ottomans or poufs can be filled with anything. Each type of filling has its own characteristics and the choice really depends on your personal preference.

  • WOOL (Traditional Method) Natural wool is the eco-friendly choice and makes for a bouncy cushion. It can be a little expensive these days and not so easy to source. If you can get it easily, we highly recommend this choice of filling; it's breathable and air permeable, retains the shape nicely and gives good weight to the cushion.

Tip: Make sure you use plenty of wool so that the cushion stays firm over time and be sure to pack tightly into the corners.

  • UNUSED BEDDING/TOWELS/CLOTHING We all have bedding and towels we no longer use but like to keep hold of 'just in case!' Using surplus textiles such as old clothes, bedding and towels is an inexpensive way of filling up your floor cushions.

Tip: Try to use heaver fabrics in the corners so that the cushions keeps its form over time.

  • PILLOWS Pillows are a neat and tidy way of filling your floor cushion. Using 4 normal sized sleeping pillows works nicely and is very quick and easy to do. If you have recently purchased new pillows for your bedroom or sofa and don't know what to do with your old ones - this is the perfect solution.

Tip: Feather down pillows make for a comfortable cushion to sit on and are easy to fluff to keep the pillow plump.

TIME TO FILL IT UP

  1. There is a large zipper opening at the bottom of the cushion. Start by working around the sides and corners, making sure they are nicely filled out. Work your way into the centre, making sure the cushion is evenly filled.

  2. Do not be afraid to fill the cushion properly. Made from thick hand-knotted wool rugs, the sewn seams are very strong so don't be shy with your filling, really pack it in.

  3. Zip up the cushion, press it well, sit on it, mould it into shape. Top up with more filling if you see any sag in the middle or unfilled corners.

  4. Enjoy!
